In Kagera, Tanzania, the KADERES Carbon Offsetting Project addresses the paradoxical water challenge
faced by coffee farmers. While their crops demand a lot of water, many struggle for safe water access.
While rainwater tanks are an option for some, most rely on distant and often contaminated sources.
Together with Basic Water Needs, Karagwe Development and Relief Services (KADERES), South Pole, and
WWF Switzerland, we collaborated to provide household water filters. As a Gold Standard-certified
initiative, the project reduces carbon emissions by a ton per family annually.
These credits, purchased by
Coop Switzerland, counteract unavoidable emissions. Over 25 shops now offer Tabletop Water
filters in Karagwe and Kyerwa. This initiative not only betters local health and livelihoods but also
contributes to global climate action.
